Movers West Auckland actually needs
West Auckland is the most varied part of the city to move in. A Massey townhouse with a concrete drive and a Titirangi house forty steps below the road are both “West Auckland”, and quoting them the same way is how people end up with an invoice they did not expect.
Almost everything that goes wrong out here comes down to two things: access at the property, and getting on or off the Northwestern at the wrong hour. Both are entirely predictable if someone asks the right questions before the day. Good West Auckland movers earn their money in that phone call, not on the truck.
Swift Movers is based in Mount Albert, which puts us a few minutes from the western suburbs. Here is what we actually plan around.

The Northwestern decides your start time
If your move touches the city, the airport or the Shore, State Highway 16 is the whole story, and two pinch points do most of the damage.
Lincoln Road. One of the busiest arterials in Auckland, and the interchange backs up well before the motorway does. A Henderson job that starts at 8am spends its first hour going nowhere.
The Te Atatū interchange and the causeway. Eastbound in the morning, westbound in the afternoon, and there is no useful way around either.
We start western moves early enough to be through before the queues build, or we work around them and load first. A truck sitting in traffic is a truck on your clock, so the start time is not an administrative detail. It is part of the quote.

Titirangi and the ranges: the access problem
This is the section every West Auckland mover should write and almost none do.
Titirangi, Laingholm, Woodlands Park, French Bay, Konini, Oratia and Waiatarua are bush suburbs on the edge of the Waitākere Ranges. Scenic Drive runs the ridge from Titirangi through to Swanson, and the streets that branch off it were laid out around the terrain rather than around delivery vehicles. In practice that means:
- Houses below the road. A great many west-facing sections drop away from the street, so the front door is one or two storeys down a flight of timber steps. Everything gets carried up, not along.
- Driveways a truck cannot use. Steep, single-lane, often with a blind bend and no turning space at the bottom. Reversing a loaded truck up a wet clay drive under bush is not something we will attempt.
- Nowhere to turn around. Some streets simply end. We plan the approach so the truck is never committed to a road it cannot get back out of.
- Bush and weather. Wet timber steps and a damp deck are slippery in a way a suburban driveway is not, and the ranges hold moisture long after the rest of Auckland has dried out.
Where the truck cannot get close, we park at the top and shuttle down with a smaller vehicle or carry in stages. It takes longer, it is priced in beforehand, and it is the right answer. A quote for a Titirangi address that has not asked about your driveway and your steps is a quote that will change on the day.
Send a photo. One picture of the driveway from the street, and one of the front door from the drive, answers more than ten minutes of questions.
The west coast: Piha, Karekare and Bethells
Worth its own note because it genuinely is a different job.
Piha sits about 39 kilometres west of the city centre, and there is one access road, which descends into the valley. Karekare and Bethells are the same story on their own roads. That means no alternative route if something goes wrong, a slow descent with a loaded vehicle, and a real dependency on the weather. After Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, the main road out of Piha was closed to non-residents for months.
We move people to and from the west coast settlements regularly. What it needs is an honest conversation first: often a smaller truck and two runs rather than one big vehicle, an early start, and a plan B if the forecast turns. Tell us it is a Piha or Bethells move at the enquiry stage and we will price it properly rather than discovering the descent on the day.
Parking, and the thing nobody tells you
Useful to know before you compare quotes: you cannot book an on-street park for a moving truck in Auckland. Auckland Transport issues residential, mobility, film and critical services permits. There is no removals permit and no way to cone off a space.
So the answer is arriving early and knowing where a truck can legally sit:
- New Lynn and Henderson town centres. Timed parking and loading zones with active enforcement. We work in stages rather than parking up for four hours.
- Terraced and townhouse developments. Common right across New Lynn, Henderson, Massey and Hobsonville. Shared driveways, visitor-parking-only rules and body corporate requirements. Check what yours allows before the day.
- The bush suburbs. Often the truck parks on the road because there is no other option, which on a narrow Titirangi street means starting early and working efficiently.
Movers West Auckland wide: the suburbs we cover
Takapuna
The commercial heart of the west, and a real mix: older bungalows through Henderson Valley and Sunnyvale, newer terraced housing and apartments around the town centre and the station. Central Henderson is a loading-zone job with timed parking; the valley is standard driveway access with more space to work. Lincoln Road traffic is the thing that shapes the timing.
New Lynn
The most intensified part of West Auckland. The area around the transport hub and Lynn Mall has filled with terraced housing and apartments, which changes the job entirely: lift bookings, shared driveways, visitor parking rules and body corporate paperwork. If you are in one of the newer developments, our apartment movers page covers how we handle lift and access coordination. Out toward Kelston and Green Bay it goes back to standard suburban streets.
Titirangi
The most demanding access in the west, and the reason this page has a whole section above. Bush sections, steep single-lane drives, houses below road level, long carries up timber steps. Titirangi Village itself has limited parking and narrow approaches. These moves take longer than the equivalent house on flat ground and we would rather tell you that in the quote than on the day. The same applies through Laingholm, Woodlands Park, French Bay and Konini.
Massey
Mostly 1970s and 80s subdivisions with sensible street widths, proper driveways and room to work, which makes Massey one of the more straightforward western suburbs for a truck. Royal Heights and the newer pockets toward Westgate are similar. The two things to flag are shared driveways in townhouse blocks and the run out to the motorway at peak.
Te Atatū
Peninsula and South, and they behave differently. Te Atatū Peninsula is exactly that, a peninsula, so there is effectively one arterial on and off it. When Te Atatū Road is slow, there is no clever alternative, which makes start times matter more here than almost anywhere else in the west. The housing is largely older bungalows on decent sections, many heavily renovated, with the waterfront streets adding tight kerbside parking. Te Atatū Peninsula is flatter, more standard suburban access, and closer to the motorway.
Glen Eden, Kelston, Green Bay and Blockhouse Bay
The southern west. Older housing stock, mature trees, and a fair number of sections that slope. Glen Eden has pockets that start to behave like Titirangi as you climb toward the ranges. Green Bay and Blockhouse Bay have streets running down toward the Manukau side, so long carries and stepped access are common.
Hobsonville, Whenuapai and West Harbour
The newest housing in the west. Hobsonville Point in particular is dense modern terraced housing with narrow shared lanes, dedicated visitor parking and body corporate rules, so it is worth checking the access rules with your development before moving day. West Harbour and Greenhithe-side properties often have longer driveways and more room. Being at the northern edge, these suburbs are also a natural crossover with the North Shore and up into Rodney.
Swanson, Ranui and Waitākere village
Semi-rural at the edges, with lifestyle blocks, long unsealed driveways and gates to negotiate. Long gravel drives are hard on a loaded truck and sometimes need a smaller vehicle. Tell us the surface and the length when you book.
Everywhere else in the west
Avondale, Glendene, Sunnyvale, Lincoln, Royal Heights, Westgate, Oratia, Waiatarua, Piha, Karekare, Te Henga and Bethells Beach, and out to Huapai, Kumeū and Riverhead on the Rodney boundary. If it is west of the city, we cover it.
What we move
- Full house moves. Anywhere in the west, across Auckland, or out of the region entirely.
- Terraced housing and apartments. New Lynn, Hobsonville Point, central Henderson. Lift access, shared lanes, loading coordination.
- Part loads and small moves. A flat, a room, a garage. A smaller load means a smaller truck and a smaller number.
- Offices and commercial. Henderson and the Lincoln Road business area especially. See office movers Auckland.
- Heavy and awkward. Pianos, safes, spa pools, whiteware. Tell us in advance so we bring the right gear and enough people, particularly if there are steps involved.
- Downsizing. Common in the older western suburbs where people have been in the same house for decades. Paced properly through our seniors moving service.
What is included
Optional: full or partial packing with materials supplied. On a long-carry property this is often the best money you will spend, because a properly packed house loads far faster and the carry is where the time goes.
How it works
Room by room, plus access at both ends: driveway grade and surface, steps, gates, lift, shared lane.
if the access is at all unusual. It is the single fastest way to an accurate quote.
usually within 15 minutes in business hours, and flag anything about the access or the timing that will affect the hours.
starting early enough to work with the Northwestern rather than against it.
What we cannot carry
Standard across the industry, and worth setting aside a week out rather than on the morning:
- Fresh, chilled or frozen food. Only dried, canned or sealed-packet food travels.
- Cooking oil, aerosols, bleach, solvents, methylated spirits and firelighters.
- Petrol, diesel, kerosene and weedkiller. Worth a second thought out west, where more households have a mower, a chainsaw and a shed to match.
- LPG bottles, unless empty, purged and certified.
- Live animals and plants, plus cash, jewellery and documents you should carry yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Auckland senior moving - answered$110 per hour for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, with no minimum hours. Volume and access decide the total. A flat Massey driveway and a Titirangi section with forty steps are genuinely different jobs, so give us the access details and the estimate will be close.
Yes. Where the truck cannot get down safely we park at the top and shuttle with a smaller vehicle, or carry in stages. It takes longer and it is priced in beforehand rather than sprung on you. Send a photo of the driveway from the street when you enquire and we will tell you exactly how we would handle it.
Yes, and we treat it as its own kind of job. There is one access road into Piha, it descends into the valley, and there is no alternative route if the weather turns. That usually means a smaller truck, an earlier start and sometimes two runs. Mention the destination at the enquiry stage so it is priced correctly.
Very common for us. Check three things with your development first: whether there is a lift and whether it needs booking, where a truck is allowed to stand, and any body corporate requirements such as floor protection or a bond. Shared lanes are usually the constraint rather than the load itself.
Yes, seven days a week from 7am to 7pm. Weekends are the busiest days, so book earlier for a Saturday, particularly at the end of the month.
Because of Lincoln Road and the Te Atatū interchange. If your move touches the city or the Shore, an hour either side of peak is the difference between a clear run and an hour of truck time you are paying for. We build the start time around it rather than driving into it.
Two to three weeks is comfortable, and longer for month-end and Fridays, which are the busiest days in Auckland. Book earlier again for a west coast move, because those need the right vehicle rather than whichever truck is free.
Yes. We cover all of Auckland and move nationwide. See house moving in Auckland for the full picture, or intercity moving if you are leaving the region.
