Rodney is enormous, and that is the whole quote
Here is the number that explains every Rodney moving quote you will ever be given.
The Rodney local board area covers 2,275 square kilometres and holds about 83,400 people. That is roughly 37 people per square kilometre. Auckland as a whole runs well over a thousand. Rodney is something like forty percent of Auckland’s land area carrying about five percent of its population.
So when a city moving company quotes you an hourly rate over the phone without asking where you actually are, they are guessing, and the guess is usually wrong in one direction or the other. Either they have underquoted the drive and will make it back somewhere, or they have padded it and you are paying for their uncertainty.
Search movers Rodney and most of what comes back is a city company that has added the word to a page. The difference is not enthusiasm, it is whether anyone asks the three questions below before giving you a number.
We would rather ask. Three questions decide a Rodney quote and none of them are about how many bedrooms you have.
Where are you, precisely? Not “Rodney”. Warkworth is 64 km from the city. Wellsford is another 25 km past that. Tapora is out on the Kaipara and is a genuinely long way from anywhere. Each of those is a different number and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
What is the last 500 metres like? Sealed or gravel, flat or steep, and how long. A hundred-metre metal drive with a bend in it and no turning space at the top is a completely different proposition to a suburban driveway, and it is the single most common reason a rural move runs over.
Is there room to turn a truck around? Reversing a loaded truck 200 metres down a metal drive in the wet is slow, and on a wet clay drive it is sometimes not possible at all. Knowing in advance means we bring the right vehicle, or we shuttle from the road in something smaller.

The motorway changed Warkworth. It did not change Wellsford.
The Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway opened in July 2023 and took State Highway 1 out of the middle of Warkworth for the first time. If your last experience of moving north was crawling through the town centre behind a truck, that is over.
It has made Warkworth a genuinely commutable proposition, and the town has responded. The population went from 5,586 in 2018 to 6,675 at the 2023 census, up nearly twenty percent in five years, and it is projected to triple in size by the late 2040s. A great deal of our Rodney work is now people moving into new Warkworth subdivisions from the Shore and the Coast.
North of Warkworth, nothing changed. Wellsford is still the old road, still two lanes, and still carries everything heading to Northland. A Wellsford move is roughly two hours each way from a city depot before anyone picks up a box. We will tell you that up front and build the day around it rather than starting at nine and hoping.
Worth mentioning because it turns up on invoices elsewhere: the Northern Gateway toll road between Ōrewa and Pūhoi is tolled, and heavy vehicles pay more than cars. A loaded moving truck is a heavy vehicle. It is a small amount, and you should hear about it from us before the job rather than after.
Movers Rodney wide: every town and settlement we cover

Warkworth, Matakana and the Matakana Coast
The busiest part of our Rodney work. Warkworth itself is a mix now: original town housing on tight older streets, and large new subdivisions on the edges with wide roads and easy truck access. Out east, Matakana, Point Wells, Omaha, Sandspit, Ti Point, Whangateau, Big Omaha, Leigh and Tāwharanui are holiday-home and lifestyle country. Omaha in particular is close to empty midweek in winter and packed at New Year, which changes what a good moving day looks like. Snells Beach and Algies Bay are more settled residential and among the easier jobs out here. Kaipara Flats and the roads behind Warkworth are proper rural, long drives and gates.
Wellsford and the far north of Rodney
The end of Auckland, and treated as such by most movers. Wellsford, Te Hana, Tomarata, Te Ārai, Pākiri, Port Albert, Tapora, Wharehine and Glorit. Long runs, often unsealed for the last stretch, and a real distance from anywhere with a hardware store if something goes wrong. We plan these as full-day jobs with an early start and everything on the truck before we leave, and we say so when we quote. If you are moving further north again, to Mangawhai or Whangārei, that is an intercity move and priced differently.
Pūhoi, Ahuroa and Kaukapakapa
The middle country. Pūhoi is a small historic village down in a valley with a narrow approach, and the drive in is tighter than the map suggests. Ahuroa and Kaukapakapa are farmland and lifestyle blocks: gates, cattle stops, long metal drives, and sometimes a locked gate nobody mentioned. Tell us if there is a gate code or a key, because standing at a closed gate is billed the same as carrying furniture and neither of us enjoys it.
Kumeū, Huapai, Riverhead, Waimauku and Taupaki
The southern end and the fastest growing part of Rodney after Warkworth. Kumeū and Huapai have filled with new subdivisions and townhouses, which means shared driveways, no turning circles, three-storey homes with no lift and newly laid berms that will not carry a loaded truck. Riverhead and Waimauku are more lifestyle blocks and vineyards. This whole corner sits on the West Auckland boundary and a lot of these moves are to or from Massey, Westgate and Hobsonville, so see West Auckland movers if that is your other address.
Helensville, Parakai, South Head and Shelly Beach
Out on the Kaipara. Helensville is a small town with an old centre and narrow streets around it, Parakai sits next door, and South Head runs a long way out on a peninsula with settlements strung down it. Shelly Beach, Makarau and the roads through there are gravel more often than not. Distances out here look small and drive long.
Dairy Flat, Coatesville, Waitoki and Wainui
Lifestyle-block country closest to the city, and some of the highest-value rural property in the country. Coatesville in particular runs to long sealed drives, gates, and houses set well back from the road behind plantings, which is pleasant to look at and adds real carry distance. Dairy Flat is changing fast with development pressure from both the Shore and the Hibiscus Coast. Wainui sits between the two. If your move crosses into the Coast, see Hibiscus Coast movers, and for anything south of here, North Shore movers.
Muriwai and the west coast
Muriwai, Bethells side and the roads out to the black sand. Steep, winding, often narrow, and in places with limited room for a large vehicle to pass or turn. Same rule as Piha over the West Auckland boundary: tell us the road and the driveway and we will bring the right truck rather than the biggest one.
Kawau Island, honestly
Kawau is part of Rodney and has no road access. Household goods get there by barge, and we do not operate one. What we can do is the mainland half properly: collect from anywhere, deliver to Sandspit, and hand over to whoever is running your barge. If someone tells you they will move you door to door on Kawau without mentioning a barge, ask them how.
What changes the price out here
- Distance from the depot. The honest one. Warkworth, Wellsford and Tapora are not the same run and are not priced as if they were.
- Driveway surface and length. Metal, clay, gravel or seal, and how many metres of it.
- Turning space. If a truck cannot turn, it reverses, and reversing is slow.
- Gates, cattle stops and codes. Free to mention in advance. Expensive to discover at 8am.
- Weather. A metal drive that is fine in February can be marginal in July. Wet clay in particular.
- Sheds, barns and the second building. Rural moves almost always have one, and it is almost never on the original list.
What we move
- Full house moves. Anywhere in Rodney, across Auckland, or out of the region.
- Lifestyle blocks and farm houses. Long drives, sheds, gates, and the workshop nobody counted.
- New subdivision moves. Warkworth, Kumeū and Huapai. Shared lanes, soft berms, three-storey stairs.
- Holiday and second homes. Omaha, Point Wells, Leigh and Snells Beach.
- Part loads and small moves. A unit, a room, a shed. Smaller load, smaller truck, smaller number.
- Moves out of the region. North to Mangawhai, Whangārei and beyond. See intercity moving.
- Offices and commercial. Mostly Warkworth and Kumeū. See office movers Auckland.
- Heavy and awkward. Pianos, safes, spa pools, ride-on mowers, whiteware. Flag it early.
What is included
Optional: full or partial packing with materials supplied. On a long-run rural job this is the best value on the list, because the drive is fixed and the only variable you control is how fast the house loads. A packed house loads in a fraction of the time an unpacked one does.
How it works
Room by room, plus the sheds, plus the access at each end.
Surface, length, gradient, gates, and whether a truck can turn at the top.
usually within 15 minutes in business hours, with the travel and the access in the number rather than discovered on the day.
starting early enough that a long run does not become a long night.
What we cannot carry
- Fresh, chilled or frozen food. Only dried, canned or sealed-packet food travels.
- Cooking oil, aerosols, bleach, solvents, methylated spirits and firelighters.
- Petrol, diesel, kerosene and weedkiller. Worth flagging on a lifestyle block, because there is usually a drum of something in the shed.
- LPG bottles, unless empty, purged and certified.
- Live animals and plants, plus cash, jewellery and documents you should carry yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Auckland senior moving - answered$110 per hour for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, with no minimum hours. Out here the drive and the driveway matter more than the house does. Give us the exact address and a description of the last few hundred metres and the estimate will be close.
The callout is a $50 flat fee and it is the same for everyone. The travel time is what genuinely differs, and we show it rather than hiding it in a padded hourly rate. A Kumeū job and a Tapora job are not the same day's work and should not cost the same.
Not if we know. It changes which truck we send and sometimes means shuttling from the road in a smaller vehicle. What causes problems is finding out on the morning, when the right truck is somewhere else. Surface, length, gradient and whether there is room to turn at the top is all we need.
Yes. Once you are past the Rodney boundary it is an intercity move and priced as a job rather than by the hour, so we can agree a fixed number before we load. See our intercity moving page or just ask.
Only as far as the mainland. Kawau has no road access and household goods go by barge, which we do not run. We will collect from anywhere and deliver to Sandspit, and you or your barge operator take it from there.
Whether a truck is allowed on the shared driveway and where it can stand, any body corporate rules about hours or floor protection, and whether the berm and the drive have been laid recently, because new ground will not carry a loaded truck. Measure the stairwell too if you own a large sofa or a king bed base.
Yes, seven days a week from 7am to 7pm. Long-run Rodney jobs are better on a day with room in it, so if your dates are flexible we will tell you which day works in your favour.
Yes, all of it. See house moving in Auckland for the full picture. A great many Rodney jobs have their other end in the city, and that half is ordinary work for us.
