There is one road, and it decides your moving day

Everybody who lives here knows this and no moving company has ever bothered to write it down.

Whangaparāoa Road is the only road along the peninsula. It runs the entire length, from the Hibiscus Coast Highway out past Gulf Harbour to Army Bay. There are two ways onto it, at Silverdale and at Ōrewa through Red Beach, but once you are east of Red Beach there is no parallel route and nothing to divert onto. If there is a crash at Stanmore Bay at 9am, everything behind it waits.

Three things follow from that, and all three cost you money if your mover has not thought about them.

Start time is not a preference here, it is the plan. On the Shore you can lose half an hour and make it up. On the peninsula you cannot, because there is no alternative route to make it up on. We start Whangaparāoa jobs early, and we say so when we quote.

Where you are on the peninsula is a real number, not a rounding error. It is about 12 kilometres from the highway to the tip. Most Hibiscus Coast movers quote one flat rate for the whole area, which prices Army Bay and Red Beach identically and means one of you is subsidising the other. We ask where on the road you are because it genuinely changes the answer.

A second trip is a proper trip. In most of Auckland, going back for a forgotten load is fifteen minutes. From Gulf Harbour it is a 25 km round trip on the one road. This is why we would rather send the right sized truck once than the cheap truck twice, and why we ask what is in the garage before quoting, not on the day.

None of that is exotic local knowledge. It is just the difference between a company that works out here and one that searched movers Whangaparaoa on a map this morning.

Penlink: roadworks now, a second road later

The second connection to the peninsula has been talked about since the 1970s and it is finally being built. O Mahurangi Penlink is a 7 km, two-lane road running from State Highway 1 at Dairy Flat across the Wēiti River to Whangaparāoa Road at Stanmore Bay. When it opens it will take a large share of peninsula traffic off the Silverdale route entirely.

When it opens is the question. The project was due to finish in late August 2026. After a site tour in August, Hibiscus Matters reported the completion date has moved out to September 2029, with unforeseen ground conditions given as the cause. The Wēiti bridge piers are in, but the road is years off carrying traffic.

What matters to you sooner than that: around mid-October, traffic is expected to be switched onto a new road alignment near New World at the Whangaparāoa Road end of the works. That is a live change to the road most Coast moves run on, and it is weeks away, not years.

One more thing worth knowing before you plan a budget around it. Penlink will be tolled, with proposed charges of $2 off-peak and $3 at peak for cars, and double that for heavy vehicles. A loaded moving truck is a heavy vehicle. It is a small number, but it is a number, and you should hear it from us rather than find it on an invoice.

Until then we do what we already do: check the current layout before the day rather than trusting a map, and build the start time around the one road you actually have.

Whangaparaoa movers, Ōrewa, Silverdale and every suburb on the Coast

The Hibiscus Coast runs from the Waiwera River in the north down to the Ōkura River in the south, about 49 square kilometres holding close to 69,000 people. Here is what changes between one part of it and the next.

Whangaparāoa, Stanmore Bay and Red Beach

The middle of the peninsula and the bulk of its population, with Stanmore Bay and Red Beach together holding more than 11,000 people. Mostly standalone homes on ordinary sections with real driveways, which makes the access side of these jobs straightforward. The complication is not the house, it is the road it sits on and where the Penlink works are that week. Red Beach is the last point with a genuine alternative route, so it behaves differently from everything east of it.

Manly, Little Manly, Tindalls Beach and Matakatia

The narrow waist of the peninsula, water on both sides and only a few hundred metres between them. Streets run down off the spine road toward the beaches and get tight and steep as they go, with some homes sitting well below the road on stepped access. Tindalls and Matakatia in particular have a lot of properties where the truck stays up top and everything is carried down. That is time, and we would rather price it correctly in advance than discover it at 8am.

Army Bay, Arkles Bay, Hobbs Bay and Wade Heads

The far end, out past Gulf Harbour toward Shakespear Regional Park. Furthest from everything, and the part of the Coast most often quoted wrong by movers based over the bridge. Beautiful, quiet, and a serious distance from a truck depot. Give us the address and we will tell you honestly what the run adds.

Gulf Harbour

Its own thing entirely: a marina, a golf course, apartments, terraces and standalone homes all in one suburb, plus the ferry. Apartment and multi-unit moves here need the same planning as anything in the city, lift bookings, loading zones, body corporate rules and floor protection, handled by our apartment and multi-unit crews. It is also the single furthest point on the peninsula, so start times are early by default.

Ōrewa and Hatfields Beach

The Coast’s town centre, and the most mixed housing stock in the area. Beachfront apartments along the Ōrewa strip, older baches behind them, newer subdivisions up the hill, and a very large retirement village population. Summer parking along the beachfront is genuinely difficult and worth planning around if you are moving between December and February. Hatfields sits just north in its own pocket, quieter and steeper.

Silverdale, Millwater and Milldale

The growth end. Millwater and Milldale are new-build country, which means terraced and duplex housing, shared driveways with no turning circle, three-storey homes with no lift, visitor-parking-only rules and freshly laid berms that will not carry a loaded truck. If you own a large sofa or a king bed base, measure the stairwell before moving day. Silverdale itself carries the retail and light industrial side and is where a lot of our commercial work on the Coast happens.

Waiwera and Stillwater

The edges, and rural rather than suburban. Waiwera is small and tucked in at the northern boundary of the Coast. Stillwater sits on the Wēiti River, directly across from where Penlink lands, which makes it worth watching over the next couple of years. Long drives, gates and unsealed surfaces are common in both. If your driveway is gravel or more than a hundred metres, tell us the surface and the length when you book, because it may need a smaller vehicle and a shuttle. Immediately west of here you cross into lifestyle-block country proper, which is covered on our Rodney movers page.

Ōkura and the southern boundary

Where the Coast meets the Shore. If you are moving between here and Albany, Torbay or Long Bay, that is a short job that crosses a boundary line and nothing more. See North Shore movers for that side of it.

Downsizing, and the village move

The Hibiscus Coast has one of the highest concentrations of retirement villages in the country. A local directory lists fourteen villages and aged care homes across the Coast, five of them on the peninsula and five more in Ōrewa. Evelyn Page and Maygrove in Ōrewa, the Peninsula Club and Gulf Rise on the peninsula, The Botanic at Silverdale. That is a lot of people moving into a smaller home in a small area.

A village move is a different job from a house move and it is worth saying how. The volume is smaller but the decisions are harder, because most of it is about what does not come. The new place usually has one bedroom instead of three and no garage. Doorways and lifts are measured, delivery windows are set by the village rather than by you, and the day is often better split than crammed.

We run these at the pace they need through our seniors moving service, and a great many of them use full or partial packing, because sorting forty years of a house is the part that takes the toll, not the lifting. If you are helping a parent through this from Australia or the South Island, we can deal with you by phone and email and them in person.

What we move

  • Full house moves. Anywhere on the Coast, across Auckland, or out of the region.
  • Retirement village and downsizing moves. Paced properly, with the village's access rules sorted in advance.
  • Apartments, terraces and townhouses. Gulf Harbour, the Ōrewa beachfront, Millwater and Milldale.
  • Stepped and below-road access. Tindalls, Matakatia, Manly and the bays. More people, more time, planned in advance.
  • Part loads and small moves. A unit, a room, a garage. Smaller load, smaller truck, smaller number.
  • Lifestyle blocks. Wainui, Dairy Flat and Stillwater. Long drives, gates and gravel.
  • Offices and commercial. Mostly Silverdale. See office movers Auckland.
  • Heavy and awkward. Pianos, safes, spa pools, whiteware. Flag it early, especially with steps involved.

What is included

Two experienced movers and a truck sized to the access as well as the load
Furniture blankets, straps, trolleys and floor protection
Dismantle and reassemble of standard furniture
Loading, transport and unloading into the rooms you want
$110/hr for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, no minimum hours

Optional: full or partial packing with materials supplied. On the peninsula this pays for itself more often than it does in town, because a properly packed house loads fast and the thing you are really buying out here is a shorter day on a road you cannot get around.

How it works

1
Tell us both addresses and what you have

Room by room, plus the access at each end: driveway, steps, shared lane, gates, village rules.

2
We check the route

including where you sit on the peninsula and what the Penlink works are doing that week.

3
We quote

usually within 15 minutes in business hours, with the run and the access built into the hours rather than discovered on the day.

4
We move you

starting early, because on this road that is the whole trick.

What we cannot carry

  • Fresh, chilled or frozen food. Only dried, canned or sealed-packet food travels.
  • Cooking oil, aerosols, bleach, solvents, methylated spirits and firelighters.
  • Petrol, diesel, kerosene and weedkiller.

$110 per hour for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, with no minimum hours. On the Coast two things move the total: how far along the peninsula you are, and the access at each end. Tell us both and the estimate will be close.

There is a $50 flat callout and it is the same one everyone pays, wherever they are. What genuinely differs is travel time, and travel time to Army Bay is not travel time to Silverdale. We would rather show you that in the quote than bury it.

They can, if your job runs through Silverdale or the Whangaparāoa Road end of the works. Traffic is expected to switch onto a new alignment near New World around mid-October, and the road itself is now reported as being years from completion. We check the current layout before the day rather than assuming last month's arrangement still holds.

Yes, and around Manly, Tindalls and Matakatia it is routine. It takes longer than a flat property and we bring more people, so tell us roughly how many steps and whether there is any vehicle access at the lower level. A photo from the street answers it in seconds and keeps the quote honest.

Mostly in the planning rather than the lifting. Villages set their own delivery windows and access rules, doorways and lifts need measuring, and the hard part is deciding what does not come rather than carrying what does. We handle those through our seniors moving service and we do not rush them.

Whether a truck is allowed on the shared driveway and where it can stand, any body corporate rules on hours or floor protection, and whether the berm is newly laid, because soft ground will not carry a loaded truck. Measure the stairwell if you own a large sofa or a king bed base.
