Moving truck parked outside a North Shore Auckland home on moving day

Movers who actually know the North Shore

Every moving company in Auckland will tell you they cover the North Shore. The list of suburbs is always the same. Most people searching for movers North Shore side of the bridge are really asking one question though: can you actually get to my front door, and how long is it going to take?

On the Shore that is almost always access. Not the load, not the distance, and not the packing. It is a Takapuna lift that has not been booked, a Devonport street with no room for a truck, or a Birkenhead driveway too steep to back down. Those are the things that turn a four-hour job into a seven-hour one, and they are entirely predictable if someone asks the right questions before the day.

Swift Movers is based in Mount Albert and works the Shore constantly, so the answer is usually yes, with a caveat about the driveway. Good North Shore movers earn their money before the truck arrives, not after. Below is what we actually plan around.

Traffic crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge between the city and the North Shore

The Harbour Bridge decides your moving day

If your move crosses the harbour in either direction, the bridge is the single biggest variable in the day, and it is worth being blunt about two things.

Timing. Southbound is bad from about 6.30am and northbound from about 3.30pm, and on the Shore side the queues start well before the on-ramps at Esmonde Road and Onewa Road. We start Shore-to-city moves early enough to be across before the worst of it, or late enough to miss it entirely. A truck sitting in traffic is a truck you are paying for.

Wind. This is the one nobody outside the trade thinks about. In strong winds, NZTA advises drivers of high-sided vehicles to avoid the Auckland Harbour Bridge and use the western ring route instead. A loaded furniture truck is a high-sided vehicle. On a genuinely windy day a North Shore move may need to run via SH18 and the Upper Harbour Bridge, which is a longer trip and needs to be built into the plan rather than discovered at 8am.

We watch the forecast the day before a Shore job for exactly this reason. If the crossing looks marginal we will tell you before the day, not from the cab.

Parking on the Shore, and the thing nobody tells you

Here is a piece of information worth having: you cannot book an on-street park for a moving truck in Auckland. Auckland Transport issues residential, mobility, film and critical services permits. There is no removals permit, no cone-off, no reserved space.

Which means the answer is arriving early, and knowing where the truck can legally sit. In practice:

Takapuna and Milford centres

Timed parking and loading zones. A loading zone has a time limit on it and enforcement is active, so we work in stages rather than parking up for four hours.

Devonport

Narrow streets, resident parking pressure, and ferry traffic. Early starts matter more here than anywhere else on the Shore.

Apartment buildings

If there is a loading bay, it usually has to be booked through the building manager. More on that below.

Hill suburbs

Birkenhead and parts of Northcote have streets where a truck can get in but cannot turn around. We will often park at the top and carry, which is worth knowing when you compare quotes.

Tell us the parking situation when you book and it stays out of the invoice. Find it out on the day and it does not.

Movers wheeling boxes through an apartment building lobby toward the service lift in Takapuna

Takapuna apartments: lifts, loading bays and the body corporate

Takapuna is the most common Shore move we do, and the one with the most moving parts. It is also the job where an experienced apartment moving crew saves you the most money, because almost all of the time is won or lost on access rather than lifting. If you are in a tower on Hurstmere Road, The Strand, Anzac Street or anywhere in the Lake Road corridor, there are three things to sort before moving day.

Book the lift. Most buildings require a service lift booking and many restrict moving hours, commonly weekdays only, or a window that excludes early mornings and evenings. Some will not allow moves on weekends at all. Ring the building manager the week you confirm your date, not the week of the move.

Book the loading bay. Separate from the lift in a lot of buildings. Without it the truck sits on the street and everything gets carried further, which costs time.

Ask about protection and deposits. Some body corporates require lift blankets, floor protection in common areas, or a bond. We bring protection as standard, but the paperwork side is between you and the building.

One practical note on Takapuna towers: check the lift’s internal dimensions if you own anything tall. A three-seater sofa, a wardrobe or a king mattress will not always go in a residential lift, and the fallback is the stairs. Worth knowing before the day rather than on the eleventh floor. Our Auckland apartment movers page covers how we handle lift bookings, stair carries and high-rise access in more detail.

Movers North Shore Auckland wide: the suburbs we cover

Takapuna

Apartments and townhouses in the centre, older bungalows and larger homes toward Hauraki and the lake. Beach traffic makes summer weekends slower than they look on a map. The centre is a lift-and-loading-bay job; the outer streets are usually straightforward driveways.

Devonport

The trickiest access on the Shore, and the nicest houses. Victorian and Edwardian villas with narrow hallways, steep front steps, no rear access and street parking only. Add ferry terminal traffic and the one road in and out via Lake Road. Devonport moves want an early start and a crew who have carried a wardrobe down a villa staircase before. Character homes also tend to hold character furniture, which is why the packing conversation matters more here.

Albany

The easiest truck access on the Shore. Newer subdivisions, wide streets, proper driveways, and space to work. The two things that catch people out are townhouse complexes with shared driveways and visitor-parking-only rules, and the distance, since Albany to the city is a long enough run that traffic timing still matters. Being on the north side of the Shore also makes Albany a natural fit for moves heading further up to the Hibiscus Coast or into Rodney.

Browns Bay

East Coast Bays living, which means a lot of sections that slope down toward the water. Steep or stepped access from street to front door is common in Browns Bay, and the streets around the village get tight, particularly near the beach reserve on a summer weekend. Long carries are normal, so a Browns Bay quote that has not asked about your driveway and your steps is a quote that is going to change on the day. The same applies through Rothesay Bay, Mairangi Bay and Torbay.

Milford

A genuine mix: older bungalows on quiet streets, plus apartments near the marina and the shopping centre. The streets around Milford Centre are narrow with timed parking, so central Milford behaves more like Takapuna than like the surrounding suburbs. The marina end has its own access rules worth checking with your building.

Birkenhead

Hills. Birkenhead, Northcote Point and Chatswood have steep, winding, narrow streets, driveways that drop away sharply, and houses where the front door is a full storey below the road. A large truck cannot always get close, and sometimes cannot turn around at all. We will shuttle with a smaller vehicle where that is the sensible answer, and we would rather price that in than surprise you with it.

Everywhere else on the Shore

Glenfield, Northcote, Beach Haven, Bayview, Forrest Hill, Sunnynook, Mairangi Bay, Torbay, Rothesay Bay, Campbells Bay, Greenhithe, Unsworth Heights and out to Silverdale. If it is on the Shore, we cover it.

What we move

  • Full house moves. Anywhere on the Shore, across the bridge, or out of Auckland entirely.
  • Apartments and townhouses. Lift access, stair carries, loading bay coordination.
  • Part loads and small moves. A flat, a room, a garage. A smaller load means a smaller truck and a smaller number.
  • Offices and commercial. Desks, workstations, files and IT, moved outside business hours where it helps. See office movers Auckland.
  • Heavy and awkward. Pianos, safes, spa pools, whiteware. Tell us in advance so we bring the right gear and the right number of people.
  • Downsizing. A big part of Shore work, and paced properly through our seniors moving service.

What is included

Two experienced movers and a truck sized to your inventory
Furniture blankets, straps, trolleys and floor protection
Dismantle and reassemble of standard furniture
Loading, transport and unloading into the rooms you want
A fixed price that can be agreed before we start

Optional: full or partial packing with materials supplied. Most people take the kitchen and leave the rest.

How it works

1
Tell us what you have and where it is

Room by room, plus the access at both ends: driveway, stairs, lift, loading bay.

2
We quote

usually within 15 minutes in business hours, and flag anything about the access that will affect the time.

3
You sort the building side

if you are in an apartment: lift booking, loading bay, any body corporate paperwork.

4
We move you

starting early enough to work with the bridge rather than against it.

What we cannot carry

Standard across the industry, and worth setting aside a week out rather than on the morning:

  • Fresh, chilled or frozen food. Only dried, canned or sealed-packet food travels.
  • Cooking oil, aerosols, bleach, solvents, methylated spirits and firelighters.
  • Petrol, diesel, kerosene and weedkiller.
  • LPG bottles, unless empty, purged and certified.
  • Live animals and plants, plus cash, jewellery and documents you should carry yourself.

$110 per hour for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, with no minimum hours. What changes the total is volume and access: a ground-floor Albany townhouse and an eleventh-floor Takapuna apartment with no loading bay are very different jobs. Give us the access details and the estimate will be close.

No surcharge. Time on the clock is time on the clock, which is exactly why we plan the crossing around peak traffic rather than driving into it.

Yes, seven days a week, 7am to 7pm. Worth checking your building first though, because some Takapuna and Milford apartment buildings restrict moves to weekdays.

Three things: the service lift booking, the loading bay if there is one, and any body corporate requirements such as lift blankets, floor protection or a bond. Do it the week you confirm your date. Also check the lift's internal dimensions if you own a large sofa, a wardrobe or a king mattress.

No, but it changes the plan. We start early, work in stages, and bring the truck size that suits the street rather than the one that suits the load. Tell us the street when you book and we will tell you honestly how we will handle it.

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Where it cannot, we park at the top and carry, or shuttle with a smaller vehicle. Either way it is priced in beforehand rather than discovered on the day. Send a photo of the driveway from the street when you enquire; it answers the question in seconds.

Two to three weeks is comfortable. Longer for month-end and for Fridays, which are the busiest days in Auckland. If your apartment building only allows weekday moves, book earlier again, because that narrows the options considerably.

Yes. We cover all of Auckland and move nationwide. See house moving in Auckland for the full picture, or intercity moving if you are leaving the region.

Two to four weeks is comfortable. Because we run on demand rather than to a schedule, we can often take a date at shorter notice than a line-haul operator, so it is always worth asking. Allow more over December and January, and more again for a Friday or end-of-month date.

Yes. Northbound moves are quoted the same way, as a dedicated run on the date you need. Mention it when you enquire so we can plan the crew at both ends.
