A mover carrying a box along an inner-city street during a Central Auckland house move

We are not driving out to Central Auckland. We are in it.

Swift Movers is based at 54 Stewart Road, Mount Albert. That is a central suburb, four kilometres from Ponsonby and about ten minutes from the CBD outside peak.

It matters more than it sounds. Most Auckland moving companies base themselves where land is cheap, which means somewhere on the fringe, which means the first and last leg of your job is a truck crossing the city. Plenty of firms advertise as movers Central Auckland wide from a depot half an hour away. When we take a Grey Lynn or Kingsland job, we are already there.

The rest of this page is the stuff that actually makes central moves difficult, and what good Central Auckland movers do about it before the day rather than on it.

Narrow inner-Auckland residential street with cars parked along both kerbs

Residential parking zones: the thing that catches people out

Here is something almost nobody tells you before moving day, and it applies to more of Central Auckland than any other part of the region.

Auckland Transport operates residential parking zones in 17 areas across the whole of Auckland, and 15 of them are central: Arch Hill, Eden Terrace, Freemans Bay, Grafton, Grey Lynn, Herne Bay, Mount Eden and Mount Eden Central, Newmarket, Parnell (four separate zones), Ponsonby, Remuera and St Mary’s Bay. The only zone outside the centre is Takapuna.

In those areas the kerbside is permit-controlled, permits go to residents, and there is no permit that covers a moving truck. AT issues residential, mobility, film and critical services permits. There is no removals category, no way to reserve a space, and no cone-off.

So what actually works:

  • Start early. Before residents leave for work, there is nothing. After they leave, there is a window. In Ponsonby and Grey Lynn that window is the whole job.
  • Use the right truck. On a narrow street with cars both sides, a smaller vehicle doing two runs beats a large one that cannot get past a parked ute.
  • Work in stages. Load in bursts rather than parking up for four hours in a space that was never legally ours to hold.
  • Talk to the neighbours. Unglamorous, free, and the single most effective thing you can do. A note in three letterboxes the day before buys you more kerb than anything else.

Tell us the street when you book. We will tell you honestly how we would work it.

Modern residential apartment towers, the kind of CBD building where moves depend on a lift booking

CBD apartments: lifts, docks and booking windows

The city centre has the most demanding residential moves in New Zealand, and almost all of the difficulty is administrative rather than physical.

Book the service lift. Most towers require it, and many restrict moving to weekday business hours only. Some do not permit weekend moves at all. Ring the building manager the week you confirm your date, not the week of the move, because in a busy building the slots go.

Book the loading dock. Usually separate from the lift booking. Docks also have height restrictions, which decides what size truck we bring, so find out the clearance and tell us.

Ask about the body corporate requirements. Lift blankets, floor protection through common areas, proof of insurance, sometimes a bond. All normal, all easier a fortnight ahead than on the morning.

Measure the lift. The one that catches people every time. A three-seater sofa, a wardrobe or a king bed base will not always fit in a residential lift, and the fallback is a stairwell you would rather not think about on the fourteenth floor. Our Auckland apartment movers page covers how we handle lift bookings, dock coordination and stair carries in detail.

The same applies in the newer towers through Newmarket, Parnell and around Britomart and the Viaduct. If your building has a dock and a booking system, our apartment moving crews deal with them most weeks.

New Zealand Victorian villa with a veranda and front steps, the typical inner-Auckland character home

Villas: Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Herne Bay and Freemans Bay

The inner-west character suburbs are beautiful and genuinely awkward to move out of, for reasons that are consistent across the whole area.

  • Narrow central hallways. Villa layouts run rooms off a single corridor, and a modern three-seater does not always make the turn into a front bedroom.
  • Front steps and a raised floor. Almost every villa sits above the path, so everything gets lifted rather than wheeled.
  • No rear or side access. Terraced villa sites often have a fence on both boundaries, so the front door is the only route in or out.
  • Narrow streets, cars both sides, and the parking zone issue above on top.
  • Original floors. Kauri and rimu that people have spent real money restoring. Floor protection is standard on our jobs, not an upsell.

None of this is a problem when it is planned. All of it is a problem discovered at 8am.

Movers Central Auckland wide: the suburbs we cover

Auckland CBD, Britomart and the Viaduct

Apartment towers, almost exclusively. Lift and dock bookings, restricted hours, tight service corridors, and traffic that makes the start time matter. Also where most of our office relocations happen, usually after hours or over a weekend to keep a business running, with larger office relocations planned floor by floor.

Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Arch Hill and Westmere

The heart of the villa belt and the heart of the parking problem. Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and Arch Hill all sit in residential parking zones. Narrow streets, character homes, front steps, no rear access. Early starts and the right truck size do most of the work.

Herne Bay, St Marys Bay and Freemans Bay

Some of the most expensive housing in the country, on some of its most difficult streets. Steeply sloping sections down toward the harbour, long flights of steps, and all three suburbs are in parking zones. Often high-value contents too, which is where our packing service earns its place.

Parnell, Newmarket and Grafton

A genuine mix of Victorian terraces, converted villas and modern apartment towers, with Parnell alone holding four separate residential parking zones. Newmarket adds retail and office moves to the residential ones. Grafton has the hospital and university effect: a lot of short-tenure rentals and a lot of moves at term boundaries.

Mount Eden, Kingsland, Morningside and Sandringham

Villas and bungalows on tighter sections, with Mount Eden covered by two parking zones. Kingsland’s streets around the village are narrow and busy on event days at Eden Park, which is worth avoiding entirely if your date is flexible.

Remuera, Epsom, Greenlane and Ellerslie

Larger homes on larger sections, generally better vehicle access, and often more to move. Remuera is in a parking zone; the others mostly are not. Long driveways and multi-level homes are the usual considerations here rather than street access.

Mount Albert, Point Chevalier, Western Springs and Waterview

Our own patch. Bungalows and villas on standard sections with reasonable access, plus a lot of infill housing behind existing homes reached by a shared drive. If you are moving here, we are minutes away.

Onehunga, Royal Oak, Three Kings, Mount Roskill and Hillsborough

The southern edge of the centre. Older housing stock, a lot of recent intensification, and increasingly terraced developments with shared lanes. Onehunga in particular has changed a great deal in a short time.

Everywhere else in the centre

Eden Terrace, Newton, Balmoral, Mount Wellington, Penrose, One Tree Hill, Greenwoods Corner, Meadowbank and Saint Johns. If it is inner Auckland, we are already close to it.

What we move

  • Apartments and towers. The CBD, Newmarket, Parnell, Britomart. Lift bookings, dock coordination, stair carries when the lift will not take it. See apartment movers Auckland.
  • Villas and character homes. Narrow hallways, front steps, original floors, no rear access.
  • Full house moves. Anywhere in the centre, across Auckland, or out of the region.
  • Part loads and small moves. The inner suburbs have a lot of one-bedroom and flat moves, and a smaller load means a smaller truck and a smaller number.
  • Offices and commercial. CBD, Newmarket and Grafton especially, usually after hours. See office movers and commercial delivery.
  • Heavy and awkward. Pianos, safes, whiteware. Flag it early, especially with villa steps or a lift involved.
  • Downsizing. Common in Remuera, Epsom and Mount Eden. Paced properly through our seniors moving service.

$110 per hour for two movers and a truck, plus a $50 flat callout, with no minimum hours. Access is what moves the total centrally, not distance. A Remuera home with a driveway and a fourteenth-floor CBD apartment with no dock booking are very different jobs.

Honestly, and with an early start. Those suburbs sit in Auckland Transport residential parking zones and there is no permit available for a moving truck, so nobody can reserve you a space. What works is starting before the street fills, bringing a truck sized to the road rather than the load, working in stages, and letting the immediate neighbours know the day before.

The service lift booking, the loading dock booking, and any body corporate requirements such as lift blankets, floor protection or proof of insurance. Do it the week you confirm your date. Also check the loading dock height, because it decides our truck size, and measure the lift if you own a large sofa or a king bed base.

Yes, it is most of what we do in the inner west. Tell us about the hallway width, the number of front steps and whether there is any rear access, and we will bring the right number of people. Floor protection over original kauri or rimu is standard, not an extra.

Yes, seven days a week from 7am to 7pm. Check your building first though, because many CBD towers restrict moving to weekday business hours and some do not allow weekend moves at all.

Yes. Swift Movers operates from Mount Albert, so most central jobs are a short run rather than a cross-town trip. It is the reason we can often take a job at shorter notice in the inner suburbs than a company based on the fringe.

Two to three weeks for a house. Longer if you are in an apartment tower, because the lift and dock booking is usually the constraint rather than our availability, and longer again for month-end and Fridays.

Yes, all of it, and nationwide. See house moving in Auckland for the full picture, or intercity moving if you are leaving the region.
