Moving truck loaded for an Auckland to Wellington house move on State Highway 1

Moving from Auckland to Wellington

People move Auckland to Wellington for a job in the public sector, a university place, a partner’s posting, or because they have decided the capital suits them better. Whatever the reason, the move itself is the same problem: a long single leg down the middle of the North Island, with your entire household in the back.

As Auckland to Wellington house movers we handle the whole run ourselves. We load in Auckland, we drive it, we unload in Wellington, and you get one point of contact for the lot. No handing your goods to a third party halfway down, and no “we will confirm the cost once it is on the truck”.

We run this route on demand rather than to a fixed timetable, which means the date is yours to choose. More on what that means for your quote below.

This page covers the Wellington run specifically. For every other North and South Island destination, see our intercity moving service.

What the Auckland to Wellington run actually involves

It is roughly 640 km by road and eight to ten hours of driving in a loaded truck without stops. That is the number that matters, and it is longer than most people picture.

The route is State Highway 1 the whole way, and it has four points that reliably cost time:

The Bombay Hills

Getting out of Auckland at the wrong hour can add an hour before the run has properly started.

Taupō

A pinch point in both directions, and worse over summer and long weekends.

The Desert Road

Exposed, high, and the first stretch to close in snow or high wind. Winter closures divert traffic through the Parapara or around SH3, which adds hours.

The Kāpiti Coast into Wellington

Transmission Gully has helped, but arriving at the wrong end of the day still costs you.

We plan departure around all four. It is not glamorous and it is the single biggest reason a move lands when we said it would.

Why it is a two-day job, and what to make of anyone promising one

This is the question we get most, so here is the straight answer.

New Zealand heavy vehicle drivers work under legal work time limits. A driver must take a break of at least 30 minutes every 5.5 hours of work time, can work a maximum of 13 hours in any 24-hour period, and must then take at least 10 hours off. After 70 hours of accumulated work, a 24-hour break is required.

Now do the arithmetic on an Auckland to Wellington move. Loading a three-bedroom house is two to four hours. The drive is eight to ten. Unloading is another two to four. That is 12 to 18 hours of work time before anyone has had lunch.

So a full household move is load on day one, deliver on day two. That is not us being slow. It is the law, and it is why your goods arrive with a driver who has slept.

If a company quotes you a same-day Auckland to Wellington household move, ask them how. Either they are running two drivers, which costs more and they should be saying so, or the answer is one you would rather know before your furniture is on the truck.

How we run this route: on demand, not on a timetable

Straight answer, because it changes what you should expect from any quote on this route.

Swift Movers runs Auckland to Wellington on demand, any day of the week. We are not a scheduled line-haul operator with a truck heading south every Tuesday. When you book, a truck and a crew are assigned to your move and yours alone.

That has one trade-off and one real advantage, and you should know both before you compare quotes.

The trade-off: we do not sell shared loads on this route. A backload, where your goods share a truck with other consignments to cut the price, only works if a company is running the leg often enough to fill the space. We are not, so we do not offer it. If you are quoted a cheap Auckland to Wellington backload elsewhere, that is a genuine option, and it means you are fitting their schedule rather than the other way round.

The advantage: you pick the date. No waiting for the next truck south, and no delivery window of "sometime in the next five days". Tell us when you need to move, including weekends, and we build the run around it.

Dedicated truck, on demand
what we do
Scheduled shared load
what line-haul operators do
Your dateYou choose it, any day of the week. You take the next scheduled run.
DeliveryLoad day one, deliver day two. A date, not a window.A window of several days.
HandlingLoaded once, unloaded once. Same crew both ends.Often consolidated with other loads en route.
CostHigher. You have the whole truck.Cheaper if you are genuinely flexible.
Best forSettlement dates, families, full households, anything fragile or valuable.Flexible dates and tight budgets.

If budget matters more than timing and your dates are genuinely open, a scheduled shared load will cost you less, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. If your settlement date is fixed, a dedicated truck is the right answer regardless of who you book.

What an Auckland to Wellington move costs

Distance is a fixed input on this route, so it is not what moves your quote. These four things are:

  • Volume. How much you are actually moving, measured in cubic metres, not bedrooms. Two identical houses can differ by half a truck.
  • Access at both ends. A Wellington hillside property with 40 steps and no truck parking is a different job to a flat driveway. Tell us up front and the quote stays the quote.
  • Packing. Doing it yourself is cheaper. Having us do it is faster and changes what your cover includes.
  • Timing. Off-peak and mid-month is cheaper than the Friday before Christmas. Because we run on demand we can usually take a date others cannot, but the busiest dates still cost more.

Give us an accurate inventory and access details at both ends and we can agree a fixed price before we load a thing. No fuel surcharges, and no revised figure on arrival in Wellington.

The quickest way to a real number is a room-by-room list, or a walkthrough video on your phone. Send it through and we will price it properly, usually within 15 minutes in business hours.

Movers blanket-wrapping and strapping furniture into a truck for the Auckland to Wellington run

Furniture movers Auckland to Wellington

Not every move is a whole house. Plenty of our Wellington runs are furniture only, and people searching for furniture movers Auckland to Wellington usually want exactly this: a part load, priced properly, on a date that suits them. We quote those the same way, and a smaller load means a smaller truck and a smaller number.

  • Full household furniture. Beds, wardrobes, dining suites, sofas, whiteware. Dismantled and reassembled at the other end where needed.
  • Part loads. A room's worth going to a flat, the contents of a garage, or one heavy awkward thing such as a piano, a safe or a fridge that has to get south.
  • Student and flat moves. Small loads on a van or small truck, priced accordingly. The cheapest way to use us on this route.
  • Office and commercial. Desks, workstations, server racks and files, moved outside business hours where it helps. See office movers.

We deliver in Wellington

and unload into the rooms you want things in, not the driveway.

Insurance, and the part worth understanding

Goods in transit cover is available on every intercity move and we will talk you through it before you book. One thing worth knowing in advance: across the New Zealand removals industry, cover distinguishes between cartons packed by the moving company and cartons packed by the customer, usually recorded as PBO, "packed by owner". Damage caused by inadequate packing inside an owner-packed carton is a standard exclusion.

That matters more on a 640 km run than on a cross-town move, because road vibration finds every gap in a badly packed box. Pack carefully using our guides below, or have us pack the fragile rooms. Ask us what your cover includes before moving day, and see the moving FAQs for the short version.

What we cannot carry

Standard across the industry and worth sorting three weeks out, not on the morning:

  • Fresh, chilled or frozen food. Only dried, canned or sealed-packet food travels.
  • Cooking oil, aerosols, bleach, solvents, methylated spirits and firelighters.
  • Petrol, diesel, kerosene and weedkiller.
  • LPG bottles, unless empty, purged and certified.
  • Live animals and plants, and cash, jewellery or documents you should carry yourself.

On a two-day move these matter more than usual, because your car is going the same way and can take them.

Where we pick up in Auckland

Anywhere in the region:

South Auckland and Franklin pickups have a head start on the Bombay Hills, which occasionally lets us load and get clear of Auckland the same morning. Worth mentioning when you enquire.

We deliver across the wider Wellington region, including the CBD, Lower and Upper Hutt, Porirua, Kāpiti and the eastern suburbs. Wellington's hills, narrow streets and step-access properties are normal for us; tell us what we are dealing with and we will bring the right truck.

Getting ready for a long-haul move

About Swift Movers

Packing for 640 km is not packing for eight. Everything gets hours of continuous vibration plus a load and unload at each end, so anything that was going to fail will fail on this route.

Load on day one, deliver on day two for a full household. The drive alone is eight to ten hours over roughly 640 km, and adding loading and unloading puts the job beyond a legal single work day for one driver. Because we run a dedicated truck on demand, you get a delivery date rather than a multi-day window.

It depends on volume, access at both ends, whether you want packing, and the date. We quote a dedicated truck, because we run this route on demand rather than to a timetable, so you are pricing a truck and crew assigned to your move alone. Send us a room-by-room inventory and access details for both ends, and a fixed price can be agreed before anything is loaded.

No. A backload shares truck space with other consignments to cut the price, and it only works for operators running the leg on a regular schedule. We run Auckland to Wellington on demand, so every job is a dedicated truck. The upside is that you choose the date instead of waiting for the next scheduled run. If your dates are genuinely flexible and budget is the priority, a scheduled operator will be cheaper, and we would rather tell you that up front.

Not for a full household with one driver. NZ work time rules cap a driver at 13 hours in a 24-hour period with a 30-minute break every 5.5 hours, and loading plus a nine-hour drive plus unloading exceeds that. Small furniture-only loads can sometimes be done in a single day, and we will tell you honestly whether yours is one of them.

Yes. Furniture-only and part loads are a good share of our Wellington runs and are the cheapest way to use us on this route, because a smaller load needs a smaller truck. One heavy awkward item on its own, such as a piano or a fridge, is fine too.

Yes, either the whole house or just the rooms you would rather not face, which is usually the kitchen. Professional packing also changes what your transit cover includes, which matters more on a long run.

Storage between dates is available at either end. Tell us early, because it changes how we schedule the truck and how the load is packed.

Yes. We cover the whole country through our intercity moving service, including South Island and inter-island moves via the Cook Strait ferry. Those need separate assessment because of ferry scheduling.

Two to four weeks is comfortable. Because we run on demand rather than to a schedule, we can often take a date at shorter notice than a line-haul operator, so it is always worth asking. Allow more over December and January, and more again for a Friday or end-of-month date.

Yes. Northbound moves are quoted the same way, as a dedicated run on the date you need. Mention it when you enquire so we can plan the crew at both ends.
